How to add and subtract fractions

Fractions must have the same denominator before you can add or subtract them. Find the least common denominator, rewrite each fraction with it, then add or subtract the numerators:

    1/2 + 1/3 = 3/6 + 2/6 = 5/6

How to multiply and divide fractions

To multiply, multiply the numerators together and the denominators together. To divide, multiply by the reciprocal of the second fraction (flip it upside down):

    2/3 × 3/4 = 6/12 = 1/2   |   2/3 ÷ 3/4 = 2/3 × 4/3 = 8/9

    Mixed numbers and simplifying

A mixed number such as 2 1/4 is first turned into an improper fraction: (2 × 4 + 1)/4 = 9/4. Results are simplified by dividing the numerator and denominator by their greatest common divisor, so 6/8 becomes 3/4.

    Frequently asked questions

How do you add fractions with different denominators?

Rewrite both fractions with a common denominator (the least common multiple of the denominators), then add the numerators. 1/4 + 1/6 = 3/12 + 2/12 = 5/12.

How do I convert a decimal to a fraction?

Write the decimal over a power of ten and simplify: 0.375 = 375/1000 = 3/8.

    What is 1/3 + 1/4?

    7/12, because 1/3 = 4/12 and 1/4 = 3/12.
