How to calculate a weighted grade

In most courses, assignments count differently: a final exam might be worth 30% of the grade and homework only 10%. A weighted average multiplies each grade by its weight, adds them up and divides by the total weight:

Weighted grade = (g₁ × w₁ + g₂ × w₂ + …) ÷ (w₁ + w₂ + …)

Example: homework 92% (weight 20), quizzes 88% (15), midterm 78% (25) and project 91.5% (10) gives (92×20 + 88×15 + 78×25 + 91.5×10) ÷ 70 = 86.1%, a B. Weights don't have to add up to 100; the calculator divides by whatever total you enter.

What do I need on the final?

Needed = (Target − Current × (1 − w)) ÷ w

Here w is the final exam's share of the course grade. With a current grade of 84%, a final worth 30% and a target of 90%, you need (90 − 84 × 0.7) ÷ 0.3 = 104%, which isn't possible without extra credit. To finish with an 85% instead, you'd need 87.3%.

Letter grade scale

The most common US scale: A+ 97–100, A 93–96, A− 90–92, B+ 87–89, B 83–86, B− 80–82, C+ 77–79, C 73–76, C− 70–72, D+ 67–69, D 63–66, D− 60–62, F below 60. Some schools use different cut-offs, so check your syllabus. When you type a letter grade, the calculator uses the middle of its range (for example B+ = 88%).

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate my grade with weights?

Multiply each grade by its weight, add the results, and divide by the sum of the weights. For 90% worth 40% and 80% worth 60%: (90×40 + 80×60) ÷ 100 = 84%.

What grade do I need on my final to get an A?

Use: needed = (target − current × (1 − final weight)) ÷ final weight. With 88% now and a final worth 25%, an A (93%) needs (93 − 88 × 0.75) ÷ 0.25 = 108%, so an A− (90%) is the realistic goal: 96% on the final.

What percentage is a B+?

On the usual US scale, a B+ is 87% to 89%.

Do the weights have to add up to 100%?

No. The calculator divides by the total of the weights, so you can use points (e.g. 50, 100, 200) or percentages of only the graded work so far.

Results are for guidance; your teacher's grading policy and rounding rules apply.
