How Pennsylvania taxes your paycheck
- Flat state tax: 3.07% of your compensation, with no standard deduction or personal exemption.
- 401(k) is not deductible: unlike federal and most state taxes, Pennsylvania taxes the money you put into a 401(k) (it does not tax the withdrawals later). The calculator applies the 3.07% to your full gross pay.
- Local earned income tax (EIT): almost every municipality and school district taxes wages, usually 1% to 2% combined. Pittsburgh residents pay 3% (1% city + 2% school district).
- Philadelphia wage tax: 3.735% for residents and 3.425% for non-residents who work in the city, from July 1, 2026. Enter it as the local tax rate.
- Unemployment insurance: employees pay 0.07% of all wages. Many municipalities also charge a Local Services Tax of up to $52 a year.
